New Here

Hello,

I was diagnosed with autism in March this year.

I am pleased I finally have answers , but I now feel I have been left there is no support where I live I live very rural, GP cant offer anything because of where we live , I feel very isolated and alone, I don't drive and struggle to get out as there is nothing here, I have no friends and my family don't live nearby, I also have anxiety, is this normal after getting a diagnosis, trying to process everything, but I just find myself getting emotional daily and struggling.

Thank You

  • Hello.

Getting diagnosed sort of gives you permission to feel all the things you were sorting of ignoring, suppressing or trying to cope with. You tend to find things more difficult for a while.

I can also be emotional as you reconsider your past. Plus you may have various beliefs or fears around what it means. As you get more knowledge and information online, there's lots of YouTube for example, it can become less scary.

The main thing is to try to find ways to calm your nervous system and free up energy to do things. Being calm changes so much.

Try not to push yourself for a while. Try to make time for yourself, don't feel guilty. It takes time, months or more to know yourself and feel comfortable. Also try to recognise positives too. Beware getting too focussed on the negatives. It helps to keep some balance.
