Electric toothbrush or manual?

Today I was at the dentist and my dentist was talking about electric toothbrushes and recommended them. I’ve always used a manual toothbrush, and I always buy the softest bristles toothbrush I can get as I find most ‘normal’ toothbrushes feel too rough and hard on my gums.

Anyway, I got home and was considering getting an electric toothbrush - but I notice there are some things online saying they can damage your gums and cause gum recession. I’m so anxious about health and dentistry and this has put me off. Does anyone on here use an electric toothbrush and what’s your opinion on them? Are they good? Have you had any bad effects from using them? And do they feel hard or soft, or just weird when you’re using them?

  • I can only use a soft, small head manual toothbrush due to sensory issues - the Boots own brand cheap one suits me.

I'm getting concerned about toothpaste now though, as the Sainsbury's Stamford Street toothpaste which I've been buying for quite some time is no longer appearing on their website when I do my online shopping. Since most of the brand toothpastes changed their formula, they taste horrible to me and I spent a lot of time trying different ones until I discovered the Stamford Street one, which had mild mint flavour and was cheap too. Why do things I like disappear? (Sigh Slight frown)

  • Thank you Lotus. I’ve had this same issue with toothpaste - the one I used changed its recipe and I’ve also failed to find one I like despite wasting quite a lot of money trying lots of alternatives. I relate to what you say about things you like changing and disappearing - it’s so annoying! . I use the softest toothbrush it’s possible to find I think.
