I'm new. Highly likely ASD Toddler.

Good afternoon all, Hope everyone is well.

I'm Helen and I am stay at home mummy to 3 children. Currently aged 14yrs, 9yrs and 2 1/2yrs.

My youngest being the one who is highly likely to be Autistic according to my very good doctor who I trust grately.

If I'm honest I'm struggling to come to terms with this all.

I know no one who has a child with ASD. And I have no real support from family and friends. I don't go out very much at all. My teenage daughter's attitude gets to me as well. She thinks she can do what she likes when she likes and the back chat... WOW!!

Doctor has prescribed me with Anti depressants but I haven't started taking them yet kind of feel like I've failed if I have to resort to them if that makes sense??

Our doctor has referred my son to a Paed but still waiting to hear back from them.

Got a hearing test next week and speech therapy next week too... Not looking forward to the hearing test to be honest.

Thank you for reading. I look forward to hearing from people soon.

  • Hi - welcome to the site Smile.   How's your little boy doing?  The hearing test + the ongoing speech therapy will be helpful to your child + will inform the diagnostic process.  Are you expecting problems with the hearing test?  If you feel you're waiting too long to see the Paed, then either get back on to your surgery or if you've got the info, ring the Paed's sec.  Sometimes we have to be pushy!  It might help you if you could meet other parents face to face via a support grp or similar.  There's info via the home pg which will show what's available in your part of the country or you can google + get results.  There are many posts from parents who feel the same or similar to you about going thru the diagnostic process.  If you haven't already, have a look at those posts.  Also there are posts about how difficult it can be sometimes with family + friends.  I can understand your feelings about the anti depressants.  I do think they have their uses but I also think they shd be used as a last resort.  However I wdn't agree that taking them is a sign of failure, they can make a difference when circumstances are v difficult + our reaction to a situation is causing depression.  So that's why I suggested finding some sort of parents grp and/or charity in your area.  Then you won't feel so alone.  Also you can post here any time you want + we'll try to help.  We all understand, whether we're neurotypicals or autistic.  Smile
