Have you been to one of the courses that are run for parents of autistic children? This might help you to manage him better. If you ring the NAS helpline they may be able to help you find a course.

  • it might be part of his autism that he needs prompting to do things. The recent NAS campaign with regard to the Care Bill highlighted this particular difficulty - that some people on the spectrum are deemed able to dress themselves, but the fact they need prompting to help initialise this process has not been adequately recognised.

Unfortunately there are lots of day-to-day issues with autism that are not characterised in triad of impairments based literature.

While I appreciate you may feel stressed, it may be important to establish more clearly what particular day-to-day issues he has, as making an issue of something he cannot readily rectify isn't helping either of you.
