Newbie …super scared but figured I'd press send & see what happens. Hello x

My names Joey. Mads is my cat.

I was diagnosed with ASD last month aged 40 (after 20+yrs of diagnosis & misdiagnosis).

I love rescue animals, komodo dragons, needle felting, houseplants, skate trainers, photography, cycling, inline skating, reading private eye & listening to LBC.

Scared to do this but hopeful to chat to people who get it and can help a little.

Thank you.

  • Completely get why you would do it that way! I have a friend of old who runs a bike shop, he was one of the mechanics who worked as part of I think Sir Steve Redgraves East to West or West to East charity ride in the US? He builds custom bikes especially for triathletes and the odd custom bits for the army. He has never told me what Mr Reynolds got up to with Claud?! Although he did tell me that he once built a bike for someone who just wanted it to hang in the office. Oh how the other half live. Safe cycling. Will await updates.

  • Hello, I am a odd size so tend to be between bike frame sizes so a custom build makes sense for me. If I brought a bike from a bike shop, it would cost me a lot more. In the past, I brought frames and added my own parts from past builds. It may not happen as I am chasing grants and it is slow progress. Hmm Claud Butler, did you know former Great Train Robber Bruce Reynolds used to work for them building frames? Cub make some great road bikes.

  • Hey LLR thank you. A custom build Rourke, I’ve just checked out the website!!! My dad still has an original Claud Butler lol I have a Cube MTB I might get a hybrid, but I spent a lot on an indoor bike so I can technically cycle anywhere?!

A fellow Private Eye subscriber excellent. I’m new to it but I’m starting to collect them as the covers are hysterical (if the world wasn’t in such a mess). I get rather excited when Wed comes around every couple of weeks.

  • Hello Mads, wellcome to the Community. I too, subscribe to Private Eye and howl at the covers and great journalism. I am also a keen cyclist and am considering an upgrade to a custom build frame by Brian Rourke.

  • Hope if the meds settle the interest reignites itself at some point. I've never watched a star wars film, or much scifi if at all. I didn't realise venera 14 a) actually made it b) lasted nearly an hour and sent back photos. Mind blowing. Clever humans.

  • I enjoyed pictures from Venera 14 from Venus, I also love reading about Mars explorations and the possibility of Mars having life in the ancient times. But looks like the rock samples will not fly to earth die ti lack of funding. Nasa also wants to explore Europa and Titan. Looks like a lot. I myself have some crazy ideas and turn them into sci fi novels with aliens and space. But currently on meds I feel like I'm in a wrong body, everything feels wrong and even my intrest is not so special anymore.

  • I am bemused by space. I've watched a lot of documentaries especially on the space shuttle programmes of late. I think its just looking up and feeling extremely insignificant, but I fully appreciate the science and all the research it blows my mind. I did enjoy watching the chap who jumped out of the air balloon 'Felix B something' although that was just about space lol Ultimately the universe is magical its just so hard to understand how big it is, how far away everything is and time in space in general.

  • You still made it! 2 cats, amazing. Maddy says hi!

She goes outside but not v far as she's nervous. Huge indoor playgrounds are awesome. I call it 'enrichment' I always move the toys and cat trees around to keep it interesting for her. Do you do the same?

Plants really awesome, outside it has to be any Acer they are like massive Bonsai trees which have always stumped me.

My mum has an absolute Orchid obsession but she only buys the half dead ones the supermarkets are about to throw and enjoys bringing them back to life?!

I love indoor plants that supposedly help with negative energy. (Spiders, Yukka, Cactus, Succulents, Carnivorous, Peace Lily, Bamboo, Aloe Vera)

    How about you?

Everyone needs a tree in their living room!!!

  • I am late to the Party, but welcome!

Is Mads indoors only or goes outside as well? I have two cats as well, they live indoors but have a huge playground!

And I am into plants as well. Do you have a favourite? I recently Fell into the orchid rabbithole, but I love to check ebay for plants that other people give away for free. I once got a huge indoor tree sort of thing which they had in some Office area. They gave it away due to issues with space, which should have probably Sound suspicious to me but well... now I have a tree in my living room.

  • Hi and welcome to the community!

I like aliens and space. I wish you find here friends and support.

  • Hiya!

I don't have socials so I thought I would try this to connect with people who experience similar things. I have found it super refreshing and validating to say what I feel opposed to what I think I should say/feel. Everyone has been really supportive. I don't know about cool but ill take it. Mads is great until she gets you up at 03:30. Hence why im up at 06:00 this is what feels like most peoples eleven o clock lol.

Hope you are ok too, thx for connecting etc.
    Joey.

  • Hi Joey,  hope you like it here. You sound super cool, and Mads is very cute!

  • Me too, we should have rung in an asked what a Ray Liotta was!!

Your research was bang on that was it omg! I would have been 7, I was shocked at the 30p price tag. You built the glow in the interior skeleton and then built the exterior.

I furthered your research by seeing how much the completed Dino would fetch on ebay..... £100 or so. More I'm sure if you had kept all the magazines!?

    Thanks for confirming the reality!

  • You should give yourself, 'a round of applause'

Lol, for ages I didn't know what a 'raileeotar' was when I first heard one, took me a bit to work out it's 'Ray Liotta'! The game is good fun!

I can remember making a T-Rex as a kid that I swear was glow in the dark from a set of magazines.

I actually think that was real! I didn't get it but I remember seeing the advert and thinking, wow that would be awesome...

I've gone and researched it and yes, the magazine was by Orbis called 'Dinsosaurs!', the first issue you got 3d glass and the head, I remember them, so maybe I did get it! Said it was 1992, I would have been 8 so would have been height of my dinosaur fixation. Seeing that's given me some joy!

  • You should give yourself, 'a round of applause' lol

I'm going to order the travel version to play with family as we always listen when we can. Its nice to get an hours break from the daily news and current affairs cycle.

I agree with a background interest into the Dino's. I can remember making a T-Rex as a kid that I swear was glow in the dark from a set of magazines. However that could quite possibly have been dream after watching Jurassic Park?!

Enjoy the game and ill be listening Thurs at 12:00.

    Joey.

  • Thank you Marianne. No judgement is massive and reassuring. Just having a few of the community respond has made me feel welcomed and part of something, finally.

    Have a good week.

    Joey (Mads is asleep)

  • Hi Joey and Mads - welcome! This is a very friendly site where you can chat about absolutely anything, so don't worry. There are enough people to find shared interests or take up new ones. No one will judge you.

  • Thank you its actually cool to be here. Most people I've told in the last month (outside my family) have told me:

    They are sorry
They wont see me any differently
Now you can get on with your life

    ...my favourite.....congratulations ?!

I used to have 2 rescue dogs but not at once, two at once is great that must be busy at times.

    Chat soon Joey.

  • Hello, thank you she was a rescue left outside when her first family moved house. She had x4 kittens at 6mths old and she kept all 4 alive and they now have new homes in pairs. She is now in very early retirement :-).

I think it has. I cant change yesterday but I can affect tomorrow. Doesn't mean I'm still furious being diagnosed so late?!

Welcome to the crazy cat club!

    Take care

    Joey.

  • Hey Joey! Thank you sharing, and love your cat! I'm new here 2, got 2 of my own smiling face with hearts

I hope your diagnosis brings you freedom, and a chance to connect with so many amazing people. I struggle with my diagnosis sometimes but it's easier to go through with other people :)
