Fascinations

Hi, I have a 16 year old son who has fixations on history, mainly Hitler and war. The fascinations have taken over his life. He says he wants to get the thoughts out of his head. He is having counselling at the moment but he masks really well so he won’t disclose any of these thoughts to the councillor. 
He’s life has been taken over by these thoughts. I have tried to say to him that what he is saying is inappropriate. I don’t think I can post on here as I don’t want to cause offence.

im reaching out for any advice on how to get him a new interest as this one is so unhealthy and he is really struggling as are we as a family. Everyday is a debate or struggle and he can’t accept that we have different opinions.

  • Do you know what it is exactly that fascinates him? I know this sounds a daft question, but sometimes learning about something can take the fear away. Maybe he's struggling to understand how so many people got sucked into Nazism and the whole ideology behind it. Could he be coming out with thnigs that are uncomfortable to hear, because he wants to understand and isn't able to articulate what he feels or why he feels it?

    If it is the genetic purity thing, then with modern science proving that anyone not recently from central Africa isn't entirely human because they will have around 2% Neanderthal genes then if you believe in genetic purity you must believe that only those recently from central Africa are pure with the rest of us being mongrels - the reverse of what Hitler and his friends wanted to believe.

    If you are interested you can get a genetic test showing your genetic makeup showing where in the world your ancestors came from (and how much of a Neanderthal you are).
