Hello!

Hi! I'm totally new to this, so don't really know how this works. I'm looking for discussions and connections about being female and late diagnosed with autism. Mental health, social care. Stuff like that.

  • Hi and welcome. I’m interested in all this too.

  • Hi and welcome to the community. Feel free to join in discussions or post about what interests you.

  • Hi  And welcome

I'm a late diagnosed female and have struggled with MH on and off all my life.

I hope you settle in here soon and get the answers you are looking for.

  • Hello Emmylou, welcome to the community.

There are quite a lot of articles on the subjects you talk about that you can access from the Advice and Guidance link at the top of the page.

For discussions there is a search bar at the top of the page too (look for the magnifying glass symbol) which will let you search the discussion threads here - here is a link to it with some search words already added to get you started:

    https://community.autism.org.uk/search?q=late%20diagnosed%20female#serpsort=&serp=1

There are some good books on understanding the subjects you ask about, such as:

Autism in heels -  the untold story of a female life on the spectrum - O'Toole, Jennifer Cook (2018)
    ISBN 9781510732841

Women and Girls with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Understanding Life Experiences from Early Childhood to Old Age - Sarah Hendrickx, Judith Gould (2015)
    ISBN 9781849055475

There is a huge amout of information to take in once you start down this route so be patient and try to break it into digestible pieces so it doesn't get overwhelming. The following book is quite good at letting you dive into specific topics without needing to read chapters about it:

Autism For Dummies (2025) - ISBN 9781394301003 (paberback); ISBN 9781394301027 (ebook)

I would also recommend browsing the discussion boards here, maybe contributing to the messages if you feel like it and ask questions - there are a lot of knowledgable people and many who have similar lived experiences to you.

A good starting point is to find one subject that interests you and dig into it for a bit and steadly build your knowledge around it - is there anything specific that you want to know more about now?
