New here

Hi everyone,

I'm Russell and I have high-functioning autism. I am a working musician in two bands and perform solo. I love rock music, including The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Oasis, The Rolling Stones to name a few. I also love to keep fit. I am hypersensitive to loud sounds, bright lights etc., I have social anxiety and absolutely terrible at small talk/conversations. I also have really poor body image and self-esteem.

  • All in all, it's just an.....other "Russell" in the wall?!

    I like cheese.

    Welcome, sir.

  • Hi and welcome to the community. I was a fan of Pink Floyd in the 70s when I was still at school, and loved The Dark Side of the Moon album.

I'm retired and I enjoy reading and playing video games.

  • Hi Iain, it isn't really a challenge whilst performing, I suppose I'm one of those who cope really well in performance settings like playing to audiences, but have a really hard time in traditional social situations like group gatherings. When it comes to music, the hypersensitivity is triggered but to a small degree, usually during performances if I'm not wearing ear protection. And it's not really what made me choose music, I essentially just really love music and playing instruments, and got inspired  by my dad and a few bands.

  • Hello Russell, welcome to the forum.

Those two things must be a real challenge when it comes to performing. How do you reconcile them?

It takes courage to put yourself out there and be the focus of attention for the audience, so this can be a good way to face up to our fears of socual anxiety and help boost our self esteem. Do you think this was part of what made you choose this route?

It's good to have you here.
