Hello everyone,
Some of you may remember my previous posts about my autism diagnosis, submitting written evidence to the House of Lords, and my campaign to see the Wales Autism Bill passed. I am writing to you again today with a crucial update, as our fight is far from over.
The Senedd Petition to resurrect the Wales Autism Bill was formally rejected, despite the tireless efforts of our community. The Welsh Government’s official position is that they do not support autism-specific legislation, believing they have enough "legislative levers" to improve services through a Code of Practice.
However, the reality on the ground is stark. The government’s own letter admits that "referral demand is not reducing, and services still do not have capacity to meet this ever-increasing demand". This is why the Code of Practice is not enough. It lacks the legal authority to force change and can be "ignored or deliberately misinterpreted by too many in positions of power". The consequences of this failure are devastating, as seen in the unacceptably long waiting times for a diagnosis and the tragic human cost of a failing system.
I have taken our campaign to a new, public platform on Change.org. With the Senedd elections in 2026, now is the time to bring this issue back to the forefront and demand a binding legal framework.
I am asking for your help. Please take a moment to sign and share the petition. Every signature proves that we deserve a society that works for autistic people.
Thank you for your continued support.
Regards,
Spencer
