Hello

Hi everyone. I'm currently waiting for an autism assessment. I've recently started my first full time job and I was wanting to find somewhere where I could access some support. I have a long history of depression and anxiety and have always found social interaction and maintaining relationships hard. I like my own company, however, I get very lonely too. I want to find groups and make friends but it is hard to find things for weekends.

Well anyway it's nice to meet you all and I hope everyone is doing okay.

  • Hello there Jordan!

I’m a full time employee as well with a history of anxiety/depression. Some days it makes it downright difficult to make it in to work, let alone actually doing the work (like today, for example). One thing that helps me is that my coworkers know I’m Autistic, so they can help out when I need help. However, do keep in mind that disclosing your diagnoses to coworkers isn’t always a good idea since it can open you up to ridicule and stigma, but I find that usually at the jobs I’ve worked there’s always a few safe people I can confide in.

  • Mine don't know about my issues. I'm going to speak to HR and my manager.

  • Not a bad idea. I find that HR is usually the safest place to disclose to, especially since they are the ones that can probably give the most support when you need it.

Oh! And remember to take mental health days. I know there’s a bias against that in the States (it’s probably worse in UK, tbh), but your management doesn’t need to know that you are using your sick days for times when your anxiety/depression is really bad. I’ve taken a handful of mental health days throughout my professional career, and they really do help when you absolutely need them.
