Hi new here

Hi everyone, we are paul and emma, first time posting but have been trawling the website for information and there's alot of it!  Our son is just starting year 9 in secondary school and we've had a real struggle getting anyone to listen to us only just getting an autism diagnosis last year and now he's going into year 9 and the school uniform is changing amongst alot of changes in school and he cannot cope we struggle to get him to stay in scchool and they try but it seems there answer is to excluded him and send him home.

Right now we are at a bit of a loss and very very stressed out looking for help but not sure where to turn, figured it was time to say hi on here as i know we are not alone , hopefuly we'll find a path and get our son the help and suort he needs.

Look forward to chatting with you.

  • I'm guessing he's the same age as my daughter as she would be going into Y9 if she were actually attending school.

We got to a point last November when I stopped trying - she had a mini breakdown sort of thing and the emergency doctor told us to keep her off.  It was the best thing I did.  I believe she'd have self harmed or worse if we'd kept trying.

The school sound as though they are being very unreasonable.  I don't believe they can exclude because he's finding it difficult to cope with the changes!  I'd advice calling the NAS helpline for some advice and also a call to the SEN department of the LA.  Does the school have somewhere he can go to get away from the sensory overload when he isn't coping?  My daughters school had a therapy room however she couldn't stay there all the time hence the breakdown!  Its a difficult situation because you want them to go to school but you also want them to be happy.  For me, accepting my daughters unhappiness and keeping her at home has been the best way forward.  She is slowly making some progress and I'm currently trying to her statemented so that she can attend a special school.
