Hiyaz

Hi, and good to meet you all!

I am a 28 year old woman who was diagnosed with ASD/Semantic Pragmatic Disorder when I was around 12. Though I consider myself to be high functioning, I have a lot of problems with anxiety that prevents me from doing everything that perhaps I would like to do. Also, despite living in supported accomodation and attending a day placement at Haswell and District Mencap, I feel rather socially isolated as I have little opportunity to interact with others outside of those places. Even inside sometimes!

Having autism but not a learning disability has meant that it is sometimes difficult to get the help I need. I have a very supportive close family, but my brother and sister are also on the spectrum and my dad is physcially disabled, so I don't like to burden my mam further if I can help it. I also have trouble fitting in as I interact better with those who do not have learning difficulties, but opportunites are very rare.

But that's enough of the negativity, I thought I'd sign up so that I could interact with people who know what I'm talking about lol! Things I enjoy are taking care of my pets (2 guinea pigs and a crested gecko), online rpg forums, cross stitch and RPG video games. I'm also trying to teach myself watercolour, but it's not going well Tongue Out

  • Why are you trying to teach yourself water colour. it is a good discipline medium if you like the routine of setting up and preparing (wetting, stretching, primary washes and so forth), but it lacks sponteneity. It is not an easy option for quick and free sketching, unless you are happy breaking the rules and applying colour just how you feel on dry unstretched paper.

You can get postcard sized pads of fairly stiff water colour paper to practice with but the danger is you will drift towards applying water colour like poster paints instead of going for translucency.

Could you face an art class?  Being with others trying to paint under a degree of supervision and instruction works well for many people, but there may  be issues from a spectrum position, especially dealing with pointless social dialogue. On the other hand, if you can cope with the trivia and distractions it may provide you with a safe refuge for thinking through other everyday issues.

  • Gotta love Guineas Wink

My babies are about five and a half, and if they live to September they'll be six. They're both going strong for now, so we'll see :)
