Hello :)

Hi everyone

I'm new here and wanted to say hello! I'm from Manchester, UK and now aged 30. I was formally diagnosed with ASD back in August last year (aged 29) having been "self-diagnosed" (a term I personally hate for the unnecessary assumptions it has brought on me) for around 3yrs prior.

I was so overwhelmingly elated and validated in receiving my diagnosis and am wearing my neurospicy badge very proudly! However, in the last few months I have been in a period of burnout like nothing I've ever experienced, so looking to this community for guidance, support and further validation. I'm also experiencing some unexpected familial relationship breakdown as a result, which is hard Pensive

Looking forward to starting to build up a rapport with many of you, and adding to the peer support I feel is very much present here!

Some - pretty naff Sweat smile - facts about me:

- Pretty certain I'm also ADHD, but we'll cross that bridge further down the line

- I love Stranger Things (hence the username), must be on my 10th re-run of the full four existing series' so far

- My job entails me advocating for neurodiversity and all strands of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging (EDIB) which gives me life!

- I have two little ones, 7 (daughter) and 3 (son) - my youngest for sure is ADHD, so hoping to gain some insights on that too as a parent

Cant wait to connect with some of you!

Speak soon, J

  • Hello J/Stranger Thing,

Peer support doesn't always start with endless "positivity" messages......and the following is a case in point!?

Familial AND friendship relationships can breakdown when we start "mentioning" about our realities - whether that be right or wrong.

I feel slight concern when someone says that they feel "validated" by a diagnosis.  A diagnosis is little more than a piece of paper for adult autists, so validation cannot come from that (in my opinion.)  I'm CERTAINLY not saying that a formal diagnosis is not merited in many cases - but I am saying that if you expect that to deliver 3rd-party approval/acceptance of your "being".......then this is likely to result in disappointment!

I believe that either a) a formal diagnosis or b) self realisation are really important things (in either instance, or both instances) so long as we accept and understand what that means - ie VERY little for 3rd parties, but can be a GAMECHANGER for our own understand and appreciation of ourselves and our own realities.

If not me - I hope you will find some connections here that you feel affinity with.  Unfortunately, this forum is a bit "stripped out" of members at the moment due to a recent LOL "upgrade" of the facilities here......but I hope you will summon the fortitude to "stick with it, here" and find YOUR people here, soon enough.

    Kind regards
