Hi everyone - newbie here with 12yo daughter just dg

Good evening

I’m glad to have found this site

my daughter who is 12 has just had Autism diagnosis. She is current Yr8 however has been deregistered from school since last June following some really traumatic experiences from ignorant teachers

now she has diagnosis I would dearly love to get her back in to a learning environment- mainstream or otherwise

im thinking of starting an application for an EHCP myself - not sure whether this is wise or to get her on roll somewhere and go from there

  • Hi there. I have a son (now 18 - a man! Where did my kid go? Lol) and his mum started a EHCP almost straight away.

He was home schooled but now he's at college doing animal studies. He doing well and loving it, and thanks to his EHCP, the studies with other ASD students.

So, you can at least get the ball rolling on it. It's a world of a difference!

Hope this helps you. Good luck (I don't think you need it though) WinkThumbsup

  • Good morning Becksbee78,

    Thank you for your post.

We have a section on our advice and guidance pages about education and the education system. Please find the link here:

    https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/education

You may find the topics under school education useful.

More specifically, I found a section about EHCPs. Please find the link here:

    https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/education/extra-help-at-school/england/ehc-assessment

The above was found under Education Jargon - England. There is also information for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales depending on where you live.

I hope you find something useful to help you.

    With best wishes,

    Anna Mod

  • Hi Becksbee78 and welcome to the forums. Hope you get things sorted out for your daughter

  • I was also diagnosed at the age of 12 and had no support from my teachers as I was bullied every day but I never knew why I was different untill my diagnoses so I would hide on the classroom deck to avoid being bullied so everyone thought I was weird I was extremely traumatized and wouldn't let anyone help me just remember you and your family are never alone and can always come to this site for help we can help you just keep being you and don't let the shadows win the fight when the light cant shine through you WILL be okay and we are here to help you

  • Welcome.  I am sorry to hear of your difficulties.

I think it is laudable that you're thinking about starting the process to get a EHCP in place prior to registering your daughter in (presumably mainstream) school.  Preferable in fact.  Doing so should help when enrolling her at a suitable school, rather than having her placed somewhere that could well be unsuitable and effectively having to wait for the EHCP to substantiate your position.

    Good luck going forward.
