Hi everyone

Hello, I am Amanda and single mum to a 6 year old with high functioning autism.  I have just signed up today.  I am very passionate about autism and the lack of awareness.  I am training to be a counsellor and aiming to work within autism.  Hope everyone is enjoying the bank holiday albeit a bit soggy.  Take care x

IThat is quite a late age for a diagnosis, i can imagine it has been hard for you x

It was late but I think that's because she was very good at masking some of the most telling signs.  I decided to move from the North to the South to be closer to family and because I was begining to struggle to keep her safe but the changes in school particularly, didn't work out well.  Everything else is settled now, we've been in our own home for 4 months (we lived with my sister for the first 5 mths) and she loves the house so hopefully the school thing will be sorted in time.

Late diagnosis is much more common for females.  Many struggle into adulthood without a diagnosis.  My eldest wasn't diagnosed until age 12.

  • I am a single mum to a 12 year old boy, diagnosed at the beginning of 2013 when he was 11, and I am now battling to get a statement in place, fun times.  I hope you are well x

  • I'm training at Guildford College and starting a degree course in Sept.  It's a tough job being a single mum to a autistic little one but I dont need to tell you that.  I have two older ones that have left home now.  That is quite a late age for a diagnosis, i can imagine it has been hard for you x

  • Hi Amanda

I'm also a single mum to a 13 yr old just diagnosed this year.  I have a 20 yr old boy as well at Uni.

Training to be a counsellor sounds like an inspiring thing to do.  Who are you doing it with?
