9 year old takes hours everything morning to get ready for school

Good morning all I'm hoping I can get some advice!

I'm 22 and recently been diagnosed with ADHD and ASD. My 9 year is on the pathway for an ASD diagnosis. I'm really struggle currently.

Every morning is becoming a war zone in my house and it's draining me. No matter what I do I can not get her to get ready in the mornings. We have tried offering tv time, gaming time, waking up earlier, getting ready the night before literally everything. No matter what we are always rushing to the school gate

I'm trying my hardest to remain a calm and collected parent but I'm not going to lie I'm snapping more and more at her and I hate myself for it Sob we had a baby 7 months ago so I'm at maximum level of overwhelmed daily. I do always apologise to my 9 year old if I snap but we are literally constantly butting heads woman facepalming

On top of all this I have EDS so I struggle walking which is part of the problem if she ends up being late we have to work the 15 minute way which causes my agony Sob

Any advice on how to help my daughter in the mornings please I'm at breaking point

  • Here are some ideas:

Reduce the amount of things for her to do in the mornings - get her to take baths or showers in the evening so that she only needs to wash face & hands and clean teeth in the morning. Put her clothes out and make sure her bag is packed the night before, and also get her breakfast things out on the table before you go to bed (apart from stuff that needs to be kept in the fridge like milk)

If it's difficult for her to wake up and she's dozing back off after you wake her, send her to bed earlier to Make sure she gets enough sleep. You said you've tried waking her up earlier, but don't expect her to get up immediately. Open the curtains or put a soft light on to help her brain wake up, maybe put some low volume gentle music on, and tell her she will need to get up in half an hour. Then after the half hour is up, remind her that she needs to start getting ready now.

You could make a planner chart with her for the week. Under the weekdays, put the tasks she needs to do in the mornings such as wash, brush teeth, put clothes on,, eat breakfast etc. and if she can tell the time, put the times to do each task next to them. Get her to write or draw a picture of the tasks, as this will help her brain to understand and remember what she needs to do. You can also put after school and weekend activities on this planner.

You could also try making sure the baby is fed and changed before your daughter gets up, so you have more time to supervise her.

    Hope things improve soon.
