9 year old with autism

Hello fellowers

My 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with Autism before the holiday break and I must say I'm relieved after having my suspicions since she was 3 years old.

I've jumped on here to seek other parents experiences with some difficulties I've been having lately with my daughter.

So on a morning she will take 90 minutes to get ready for school,  I've tried waking her earlier on a morning but still find she will take this long. The most difficult task is her hair, We've bought detangling brushes, soft bristle brushes and still she tenses up when it comes to this task. It gets to a stage where I will give up with already running late and she senses my impatience. What else can I do?? Help!!

Also have others found difficulties getting into special needs school once in mainstream setting? My girl is 2 years behind in education and each special need school tried so far have refused her a place as they "can't meet her needs" this transition is being looked at by her EHCP coordinator who rarely has communication with me. What can I do in this situation if anything?

Thanks for reading x

  • Hi and welcome.

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is with her hair - is it that it's long and you need to tie it back or plait it for school? Why not get it cut to shoulder length and leave it loose, so it just needs a gentle brush in the morning? If its short, you could try teaching her to brush it herself and if it tangles ask your hairdresser for advice on what shampoo to use to stop this.

We have a community member.called Catwoman who is an ex hairdresser, so if she sees this she might be able to advise.
