Hi

Hi,

I'm Toni, I am currently waiting for a diagnosis of Asperger's??? for my 19 year old son. I have been asking for this since he was 2! He has had many dignosis over the years but only recently has his Mental health social worker and psychiatrist acknowledged that he may have Asperger's. They have recently, succesfully obtained funding for an assessment but we have been told we may have a 12 month wait for the assessment and in the meantime my lovely son has no life.. he couldn't maintain his college placement (2 attempts) he has never managed to work due to anxiety of new situations, has had no help with occupational therapy or other day time opportunities. He has basically been left to fester at home causing him deep depression, self harming, attempted suicides and 2 periods in adolecent Mental Health facilities (one informal and one formal).

I am hopeful I will meet other parents in similar situations on here.

  • Hello Hope,

Thanks for your reply. yes I agree. Been banging my head against a brick wall for years and doing lots and lots of shouting!. When he became 18 i got him referred for Psychological Therapy and he has seen a therapist several times who assessed his therapeutic needs. He has said that he needs dialectal behaviour therapy  who he has referred my son to, and not suggested anything else, using the excuse that until he has an accurate diagnosis they dont know which way to go with him. That was several weeks ago and we have heard not a peep since.

  • The mental health system in this country is a disgrace, as I have found out to my own peril. Has your son been offered any therapy - CBT or other - for his anxiety? Unfortunately, it seems you have to shout pretty loudly in order for them to sit up and listen.
