Hullo

Hi everybody,

I wanted to say hullo, and am looking for help and advice with our 3 year old son, Jacob.

He's not been speaking very much, and was evaluated by a paediatrician on Thursday. Although it's not a formal diagnosis yet, she's of the opinion his symptoms fit within the autism-spectrum.

My reaction is... that I'm excited we seem to be finally coming to a diagnosis that is piecing his symptoms together, and hope we can start helping him out a bit.

So... I'm busy trying to learn as much as possible about things.

Our biggest issue at the moment is Constipation and Toilet-training.  My son's still in nappies, but has been crossing his legs etc to stop himself from "going" for a poo.  We're currently giving him 1 sachet of Movicol each night, and trying to have him tell us when he wants to go.  He's a very quick learner when things are game-related or fun, but we're struggling to make him understand this is all OK, and it sometimes stresses him out.

Docs advice was to try and get him back into a normal routine, and then introduce potty / toilet training once he's comfortable.  He doesn't like being changed once he's dirty, but also doesn't like not wearing a nappy either.

Any advice welcome,

Alan

  • Hi there,

I am in the process of potty training my 5 1/2 year old son Lincoln at the moment. We have used a PECS routine to help him to sit on the toilet as part of his daily routine. He is just getting to the stage now (after 9 months) of starting to do some wee's on the toilet. There is also a fair amount going on the carpet as well. As for the other he seems to prefer to disassociate himself from unless smearing on the carpets etc. With reference to Jacob you say he is holding his bowel movements so it sounds like the awareness is there but some issue with using the toilet. Could he be scared of this? There are bidet shelves you can buy which sit under the seat itself so there is a shallow tray and therefore no drop or view of the water. Would a pecs routine help your son also? Even if he sits on the toilet for a few seconds or just spends more time in the bathroom itself it's a start. If your son likes stories then pirate pete is a good one as it is another way if visually showing the toile ting process without too many words. It may take a long time or a short time until Jacob feels ready. I know with my son this has been a long process which has taken several years but he finally (fingers crossed) seems to be getting it.
