Newbie Incoming

Hello, Everyone I am Jay I've just had a ASD diagnosis (like three weeks ago). I'm 46, honestly I don't know how I feel about my diagnosis I've just always known that there are aspects of my life that don't come easy. Now I have to figure out who I am. Hopefully this forum can me on my journey. It's nice to meet you all.

  • Welcome.

It will take time to process the information from your diagnosis. It could get a little bumpy when you look back at 'what if' events. Try not to be too hard on yourself. I am well over a year past my diagnosis and I feel that I am still learning. Do not expect this to just be a process that takes just a few weeks.

Allow yourself this time and be kind to yourself. You are not broken just because you are different to NT folks, you just need to find your way to manoeuvre as an autistic person in the NT landscape.

  • Thankyou for your kind and wise words. I don't expect this to be a quick process with an end. In fact I see it more a life-long journey of discovery.

For me getting the diagnosis was starting point, there is a lot to unpack.

Like the first questions that spring to mind is I know I was assessed using the DSM-5 guidelines and diagnosed as " ASD without intellectual disabilities".  I assume this is what may have been called "High Functioning" ASD. but the report isn't very specific and just outlines all the area in life where I struggle. is this normal for a diagnosis?

  • Thats a good attitude to take. Do not get too hung up on the terminology. Using something like ASC or ASD is an umbrella term. The terms you use can be found in use but these are labels chosen by NTs' to describe autists in their own image of self. The only label that counts is the one you choose or not.

I have started to use the term 'Latelings' to describe late diagnosed adults with ASD. Similar to "earthlings," but  conveying a sense of belonging to a unique group. You will find that the alien term is used a bit in peoples nicknames.
