Wirl wind.....

Hi - new here

Since moving house to a new area last Easter and son (aged 11) changing school lots has happened.

CAMHS referral (to ASD diagnostic team) and request for statementing made by school, leading to a proposed statement earlier this month and a final diagnosis report last week (Aspergers).

Diagnosis has been complex, first suggested by school in yr2, referral to children's centre was passed on to OT as the appropriate team in yr3, we saw peadeatrician in yr 4 and said no indications of ASD.......issue is he is all OK at home......but school is very different.

So assessment with ASD team just before christmas (I made a fuss at the 9mth wait I was told it would be for an appointment and apparently he was a priority case), diagnosis not straight forward and finally Aspergers has been decided upon.

We have sort of told him, but possibly put too positive spin on it...ie Einstein, Bill Gates etc.

He is very clever (top 0.1%) and in lots of areas.  But struggles to record (writing difficult), gets stressed that will get something wrong - so much so does not try.  Self harms and leaves the classroom regularly (on a couple of occasions tried to leave school).  But he has a fab sense of humour, gets on really well with his cousin and sister.  Oh and eating is a nightmare (just yoghurt, chicken nuggets, french bread, some fruit and vast amounts of weetabix!).

Trying to sort school (for yr 7) and finalising statement at the mo.

Sorry this has turned into a long message............
