Hello.

Hello, I'm 22 and I think I may have some form of aspergers.

I was reading a book where the main character did have, and I realised I knew next to nothing other than what the news reports about it. So I decided to do some research on it and started to realise alot of the aspergers traits apply to me, or applied alot more when I was younger. I know its easy to get carried away with self-diagnosis on the internet but some really quite specific traits apply to me.

So I went and did the baren-cohen test and scored 40, which puts me way into probaly have it category. I never even considered before I might have some form of asd, and it would make alot of sense to my childhood and the problems and frustrations I have now. But part of me feels like a fraud for thinking I might, as I have had a job for a few years now, although being in a qa job at a factory helps.

But outside a few close people I find social interaction very hard, and even with them I am very awkward. Recently I have been getting increasingly lonely as many people I used to know have moved away, and I can't find new ones. I don't know if this is the right place to talk in depth about my background, but I would like advice and someone who understands to talk to.

Thanks.

  • Thank you.

I would like to write a bit more about it down as it would organise everything, at the moment its all in my head. Where would it be best on this forum to do this?

  • Hello Asimov,

    Welcome to the forum.

Perhaps the first step to take is to go to your GP and ask to be referred for an autism assessment, from what I read here on the forum you are entitled to this. It would be a good idea to take a print-out of any autism test results you have done and a list of what difficulties you have (like those you have mentioned above) this will help your 'case' for referral.

Don't feel like a fraud just because you hold down a job, this doesn't mean you aren't on the spectrum (though you may not be) instead pat yourself on the back for coping so well despite your difficulties.

Hope you get a positive outcome from the GP if that's the route you decide to take.
