Going private

Hi Wave

Super new to this what are peoples views going private for an assessment? Bit of background

Son 33years (4 in dec)

Very little speech

No sense of danger runs out in to the road, climbs everything, waves to strangers

Bites, hits, kicks and pinches

Yellow food eater

Spins, jumps a lot

Squints his eyes a lot

Masks at nursery and brusts when he's out

Nursery say he's good as gold and does everything asked which isn't helping

Both his cousins have autism and he's just like them when they were his  age.

  • Private assessment and diagnosis are quicker than the NHS generally but obviously there is a cost associated with it. I went private and it was a smooth process and told me what I had suspected for a long time. I did try the NHS first but I was "lost" on their system twice!

You could always read up on private assessments and see what best suits your son and what you might be able to afford.

    Wish you luck.

  • It's a little early to get a good diagnosis, especially as there's a variety of similar conditions to consider. Probably best to wait a bit more until they're reaching school age and in the mean time, work with your boy on reinforcing good choices and steering away from bad.

  • I know people who found the long NHS wait time meant they didn't get a diagnosis at a time it could have helped their kids, like before exams or other crucial times, a diagnosis would have meant having extra time or not being made to sit in the large halls to take tests for example.

It's not cheap to go private for anything, but if you can do it you may find you'll look back in years to come and be glad you did if it's something that helps him.

  • That's really good to know, I just feel its me and my family fighting for my boy he's super hard work, NHS waiting time is ridiculous and I would like to get some sort of answers before starting school if I can.

  • My diagnosis was a lot later in life, but i was lucky to be able to go private due to work providing AXA cover. Waiting list was 14 weeks, apparently NHS is anything upto a year or two now. So I guess if you're wanting answers quickly you'd need to go  private.

Hope everything works out for you!
