My sons suprise autism diagnosis

Hi everyone I took my nearly 6 year old boy for his follow up appointment with the peadatricion which indicated there was a strong possibility he had adhd today we went along with the family support worker from his school to my suprise he said he had autism mild learning difficulties and mild adhd the autism does explain some of his weird behaviour ibut it's completely took me by suprise I think a lot of it stems from him being a only child so I haven't got another child to compare him to has anyone else been through a similar situation  thanks in advance Xx

  • I didn't think there was anything wrong with him it was the school that wanted him to be assessed because if his behaviour at school it pointed towards ADHD but I think the symptoms are really similar it does answer a lot of things though I'm just glad to finally start helping him  weird is the wrong  word  but certain things or behaviour  he used to do but most of the symptoms of austism  apply to him I think people have a misconception of austism  until it's diagnosed  closer to home  I've been reading up alot on autism  as I want to understand and help him as much as I can

  • Hi - I think a parent notices there's a difference with a child so seeks advice.  Certain "conditions" get mentioned.  When the assessment's complete they give their opinion.  A lot of parents don't know much at all about autism. I didn't when my son was diagnosed.  Really all I knew was the word.  As you'll see from other posters, some parents find they have to learn about how autism affects their child as an individual, their rights (educational, social care, dwp).  That's a lot to get to grips with.  Take things 1 step at a time, check out the site, ask whatever you want.  Ps : as you come to learn more about autism you'll understand that what appears "weird" to you is actually notSmile
