Grandmother worried about self harming!

Hi,

I've got a 7 yr old daughter who was diagnosed with mild autism 3 1/2 years ago and occaisionally we have had to smack to when she has done something seriously bad/wrong! She now has a habit of smacking the back of her hand when we tell her she has done something bad/wrong and now my mother is worried she might start self harming when she is older!

Has there been any evidence to suggest that could happen?

  • Hi

I have a son with asperger syndrome who is now 28. He remembers the one occassion ( i cant remember it!) i smacked him. He is very sensitive and i personally think a firm "No" is better than a smack. My son never did anything "naughty" to be honest he just always didnt understand what was expected of him so to me smacking would not have been appropriate.
