New to NAS

Hi,

My name's Shelley, I'm married and we have a 2yr old son who has been privately diagnosed with ASD. I'm also 37 weeks pregnant with another boy. I thought I would join here for advice and hopefully make some new friends that have some understanding of what we're all going through. My son in general is a very happy little boy, he doesn't understand a lot of things. If i don't make sure he has something to eat or drink he would go all day without even asking. He does say some words he recognises shapes, letters and numbers. He loves visual stimulation and will shake things and look out of the corner of his eyes at things.  We haven't told any of our friends apart from a couple, only because they're quite gossipy and I can't bear the thought of people talking about my son behind my back.

Anyway, I just wanted to ask if anyone has gone on to have other children and their second has had ASD?

  • I have two sons with ASD who are 2 years apart.  They are interested in the same things and support each other enormously.  I am truly blessed.    I know of other families where one child has ASD and the other doesn't.  In these situations I have seen nothing but love and support between the siblings.

Re telling people, sometimes it's hard for friends and families to accept / support / understand ASD and it may take some time.   My greatest support came from other families who have children with ASD, nothing like being in the same boat!

    Wishing you well. x
