Hello
My son who is nearly 8 has just been diagnosed with Autism. He can struggle to cope with his emotions and will have outbursts of anger, when he'll throw items in the house, hit me or my husband and scream. His main issues are sensory related. I'm just wondering if anyone else has children who have these outbursts and whether they have tried strategies to help? The psychologist who assessed my son recommended Sensi therapy but our local centre can't fit him in at the moment.
Many thanks.
Rebecca
Have you tried looking into what Sensi therapy entails and perhaps making a homebrew version? That's what I've always found helpful when on waiting lists: find resources to DIY it in the mean time, and consult folks who are on the actual courses via support groups online.
Hi Rebecca, sorry to hear your son is struggling to cope with his emotions. Individuals on the spectrum can often display behaviour that may be challenging. There will generally be a reason for this and it is important to try and understand the trigger for the behaviour when developing strategies. You may like to have a look at the following link for more information on behaviour and strategies: https://www.autism.org.uk/advice-and-guidance/topics/behaviour
You may be interested in seeking some professional support regarding the behaviour. You can search for professionals in your area we are aware of on the Autism Services Directory: https://www.autism.org.uk/directory
You might also like to take a look at The Challenging Behaviour Foundation website for further information and advice: https://www.challengingbehaviour.org.uk. They also have an information and support service which you can contact by phone or email – details can be found here: https://www.challengingbehaviour.org.uk/for-family-carers/family-support-service/
Hope something in there helps,
