I won't bore you with my history. I'm 63 and I believe I have Asperger Syndrome - not contested, I fit the picture perfectly, but .....
2 years ago I was assessed by my local mental health dept. Basically I was told that it was too late in my life for diagnosis, regardless of my clear symptons and genetic links to autism.
Today I went back to my GP, my original intention, to ask for anti-depressants, but I decided to raise the subject of Aspergers again. I am gobsmacked at his response! He says that Asperger Syndrome is never diagnosed. It is just a matter of treating an individual's symptons appropriately. I had a few questions ...... so nobody has ever been diagnosed with AS? What is the point of giving the syndrome a specific name? Why did anyone bother to research it in the first place?
He has referred me back to my local mental health dept for counselling....... I would really appreciate your feedback on that ...... is counselling an accepted treatment for AS? I'm going to try and keep an open mind but I have serious doubts.
Just as I got up to leave the surgery I asked my GP "do you know about the Autism Act Strategy ......a clear and considered path to diagnosis .... because I have encountered a brick wall" His reply "its your age"
