Husband and Daughter with ASD.

Hi all, my young daughter and husband have recently been diagnosed with ASD. My husband has struggled with daily life and social interactions for as long as I have known him but since the diagnosis this has become much worse. I wondered if anyone could advise me of any support groups for myself/ individuals who may be able to assist so that I am able to support him more effectively.

I have done extensive amounts of reading/ listening to podcasts and online seminars/ training but would appreciate any information you may feel may be useful.

Many thanks

Jane

  • Before I discovered this different NeuroType I thought it was strange others couldn't sense the world like I could. I thought maybe this was a byproduct of our capitalist-consumer societies. And while it may be, how is it things are allowed to be so harmful to the human body?

I also found it strange many had 'issues' with following a sentence or would say what they don't mean but leave the listener to guess what they do.

I doubt I'm anywhere near as intelligent as my father, and I also want to be kind as I've experienced enough cruelty and much of it through being misunderstood. I'm in my late 40's and only really started looking into this a few years ago, but I've recognised I now need to change my approach to socialising even though I was already trying to dance about others and make accommodations for them. Now I'm not just second guessing every minor detail at a rapid speed in my head (which makes me appear slower or more thought-full), but thinking with more clarity on how to Pick one's Battle's and when to even engage. Tidying up miscommunication is extra work. It's a little better not having it to begin with.

Everything this chap writes about on autistic thinking and our different traits is probably one of the best re-imaginings: https://autcollab.org/2020/04/30/autism-the-cultural-immune-system-of-human-societies/?fbclid=IwAR37xumHkRga0hADICA80wxaWycn7_Kr9Oc6uZhcs2zJ0QzamXOI4qwU2bQ
