New and seeking advice

Hi everybody

I've recently started to suspect that I'm autistic. The more traits I've read about, the more I've gone, 'oh hey, I've got that'. My stimming, tics, avoiding social situations, great memory for useless facts (but terrible memory for important things), love of stats. It all seems to line up.

I did that AQ50 test and got 33. I've looked at getting an official diagnosis, but I've been told it will take about a year, but I'm only in the UK for about another 14 months, so may get part way through and have to leave anyway.

Does anybody have any advice on how quick it is once you're off the waiting list, or should I just wait until I get home and join the waiting list there?

Also, is there a way to get a preliminary result quicker? Or if anybody would be willing to offer their opinion. I don't want to waste the doctor's time (and people's in this forum) if it turns out I'm just over-thinking things.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

  • With those traits you are most likely autistic. If I was you I would just get on the NHS list - if you have to leave before the process is finished  you won’t have lost anything. No harm will have been done - so why not at least try?

  • Thanks Kate. I appreciate the opinion. My wife always kind of always just laughed it off when I brought it up (not in a mean way), so I appreciate your take.

I've got in contact with Sara Heath from the Shropshire Autonomy as suggested above, but I'll get on the NHS list if that doesn't work (or turns out to be too expensive). I'm 31 and I've been fine without a diagnosis so far, so I can wait on the NHS list if need be.
