Grandson with autism

Hi grandsons on is 2 and has just been diagnosed. He is terribly finicky with his food, any suggestions would be helpful, thank youthank you

  • If he's getting a well balanced diet then don't worry too much.

If he isn't then look for what it is about the foods won't eat that means he won't eat them, or what it is about the foods he will eat.

For some people on the spectrum it's a sensory issue - the smell, texture, or taste of the food.

For some it's a category thing - only 'yellow' food, or no 'red' food, for example.

If you can figure out what the factors are that means he will/won't eat something you can then try to work with his preferences to widen his dietary intake and give him a more balanced diet.

Don't try to fight against his preferences, you will be fighting a losing battle, and will only cause him distress.

However, you may also be able to use bribery to some extent (we, on the spectrum are motivated more by reward than what we percieve as a punishment).
