Which therapy?

Hi everybody

I've just joined the community because I want to help my lovely nephew. It's difficult because he lives in the U.S. and things are probably done differently there.

He's 6 yrs old and has only recently been diagnosed with autism. I think there was a lot of denial so it took a while to seek a diagnosis.

I've been trying to read up as much as I can to try to help, but it's really confusing.

My sister and her husband are home schooling my nephew. They've been offered something called ABA treatment, where the therapist comes to their home for two hours a day for a certain period of time (not sure how long) and they're very unsure as to whether to take it up or not, because they've heard such mixed reports about it.

He's also having a therapy called NR (Neurological Reorganisation) and they're also doing a sort of biological intervention to try to help with the various physical problems to do with the gut etc, so various vitamins, a gluten and casein free diet etc.

I would really appreciate any help you can give me with this. Ploughing through Google has made me even more confused!

Thanks very much

Lili

  • Hi Lili

It’s fantastic you are helping your little nephew Smile . Also great he is in the US as they do offer lots more services then in the UK.

We been on the son-rise course here and would most certainly recommend it – speciality as it’s based in the US! They back here in London in August so check it out.

Yes it can be very daunting trying to understand Autism and how best to manage and improve well-being. Also there are lots of interventions out there to further confuse you! I think it will be a combination of ideas that are suited to the child. Parents are often facing daily very challenging situations so any help is most welcome.

Old fashion 1-1 play therapy and diet will most certainly help. There is no quick fix…it’s all hard work but very rewarding!

Feel free to contact if you need a chat Smile

  • I wish the world would stop trying to make us into something we're not and accept us for what we are!

@the OP: I've looked up ABA in the past, and there is next to no evidence for it making any difference what so ever.

Similarly, changing an autistic child's diet will only help if that autistic child has co-existing dietary-based condition. It will make no difference if not. And there is very little evidence that it helps with autism in general.

I've not looked up NR but it sounds like exactly the same kind of voodoo medicine pushed by modern day snake oil salesmen.

The problem with all these so called therapies is that they do, and can only do, absolutely nothing to alter the underlying causes of autism.

  • sounds like a mirror repeating sequence technique,, train and retrain cycle working on the root mindset and bodysets muscles.,, sounds logical a bit like exercise. On my own little muses, I think balance is very important for the autism brain and body. I don't see any harm in this approach of retaping.

  • I agree with Stuffed.  The NR doesn't, on the face of it, sound as if it is based on any real understanding of the Spectrum.  What sort of difficulties does your nephew have?

  • Thanks for explainng that therapy, my personal opinion is that trying to make a child something they will never be fundamentally causes further problems.

Whatever is decided try to appreciate acceptable behaviour and minimise reactions to that which society finds unacceptable.

Look at environmental over stimulating causing problems, noises etc and foster childs interests.

sAs an adult the most well meaning intentions called me the most upset.

  • Hi again

Sorry, I should have explained a bit about NR, although I don't know enough yet. It's to do with reorganising the brain based on taking the child back to basic developmental milestones they might have missed, or not learnt properly, so for example the child practises crawling again, and other movement based activities to help the brain to re-wire.

I'm still trying to learn about what it is exactly, but any help much appreciated.

    Thanks very much
