new in North Yorkshire

Hello everyone,

I have just registered with the site today having finally received confirmation from the ed psych at school that he also thinks that my eldest son has Aspergers, obviously we will then be going through the diagnosis process with a clinical psychologist, but it has been a huge relief to finally find someone who can help my son and I .. also who agrees that he does have a condition and is not just behavioural issues!!

We moved back to the Uk after 8yrs in france last summer, 8yrs of struggling to find ways to help him cope at school with no support what so ever.  It has only been through talking to CAMHS and the ed psych that I can now begin to fully understand, help and support my son. (France statisitics state that only 4.5 in 10,000 are diagnosed with ASD so he probably never would have been diagnosed there as it is not even currently part of medical training!!!).

My son would really like to know more about aspergers, possibly in the future be able to meet other children of his age (13) .. I was wondering if anyone knows of any groups near the Whitby area?

Anyway, that's my intro! Will carry on exploring the site :)

  • Hi - welcome to the site.  Sounds like it was tough going in France.  I don't know what's available in the NY/Whitby area but it may be worth asking those who are going to be involved in assessing your son whether they know of any groups for him + parents' groups if you're interested.  Some areas also have a befriending service, usually run by a charitable organisation.  My son had a couple of friends for a few years + enjoyed his time with them.  There's loads of info on the site via the home page so have a look there if you haven't already.  Also just chip in when you want.  Everyone understands on here.
