Hello

Hi All,

I have just this minute joined this site, having found out a few weeks ago that our oldest son- aged 9, has Aspergers.  I am over the moon at the diagnosis, as I have tried for a long time to get a medical professional to agree with my susspision.  I have, over the last 4 years been turned away by many Doctors and other healthcare professionals and been told I am just an overprotective parent. However we are finally here!

I have treated our son and bought him up as an Aspergic child even without the diagnosis, as I knew without doubt that's what he had. Whilst for me the diagnosis was great, for our son it has been recieved very badly.  He agree's that what he has, but feels there should be a medicine to fix him.  He is currently very emotional- bless him.

Anyway, I hope to learn much from this forum.  I am a forces wife and so fairly cut-off from civi- society as we currently live outside the U.K, on a posting.

so........ Hi!

  • Hi - welcome.  Sounds like you're doing a great job with your son.  Sometimes getting a diagnosis can come as a shock + time is needed to adjust.  Maybe this is how your son's feeling.  There are posts on here about how a child might react to a diagnosis. There's loads of info via the home pg so something there may help your son with his diagnosis.  If you were living here then you cd apply for a statement of educational needs so your son would get the support he might need in school.  I don't know how that works with you being abroad??  Someone else might know.  There's the nas helpline + you can email also.  I think the posts are full of useful info/insights etc so they're a good place to start.  Just chip in when you want to.  Everyone understands on here.
