Hello

I am Emma and my little boy who is 3 is currently undergoing assessment for ASD. We have basically had the diagnosis confirmed and are awaiting the lengthy exam to find out where he is on the spectrum. He has type 1 diabetes as well and keeping him healthy is hard as his blood sugar varies wildly and he is so particular about what he eats.

Over the last week or so we have found it a lot harder to make contact with him. He re-enacts parts of tv shows he likes but his eye contact and verbal communication has dwindled a lot.

I am feeling pretty overwhelmed at the moment to be honest and just wanted to say hi in a friendly place where my concerns are understood.

  • Hi emmamg - welcome to the site.  It must be difficult getting to grips with everything especially with having to take the diabetes + his eating habits into account all the time as well.   I can understand you feeling overwhelmed right now, but you've come to the right place for info + support.   There are lots of posts from parents talking about getting a diagnosis so have a look.  It can take adjusting to + people do that in their own time.  You can't learn everything at once.  Ultimately he's the same little person he always was.  Learning about how autism affects him means you can understand + help him.  If you haven't already, have a look at the home pg which is the gateway to all sorts of useful info.  I don't know much about diabetes but if it's not well controlled then that must make things difficult for your son + the rest of you.  What useful?? advice have you been given about that in relation to an autistic child.  The nas has a helpline.   Keep in touch + let us know how things go.  There may be other posters who have direct experience of diabetes/autism who will be more helpful than I've been.
