Hello I'm a frazzled mum

Hello,

im a frazzled mum who's 10 year old son won't go to school on a Monday because he has had a hissy fit over a simple piece of homework during the weekend!

trying to persuade my husband to try my son on Prozac as recommended by Professor Peter Hill but he says there are too many side effects so he keeps putting off starting the meds!

any ideas welcome my son attends More House School in Farnham when he feeas like going!

  • when he feels like going? that sounds bad from the start and the term "hissy fit" sounds like he's had a full out tantrum as opposed to a meltdown.  but i'd work on a soothed response to the situation maybe take him in quietly to the office and try and resolve the matter of the home-work.  DONT make the ultimate mistake of letting him stay home because that will make no end of problems for you as it might give him the idea that "meltdown = no school" when he doesnt want to go for whatever reason and that is going to make your problems far bigger than they already are by the sounds of things

and prozac does have a fair number of side effects to it not the least of which is outright exhaustion and at 10 years old I REALLY wouldnt recommend it unless you thoroughly double check it with your gp and then triple check it with the pharmasist after that.  so I agree with your husband on the matter as fart as not giving it to him....sounds odd but try lavender fragencing around the home maybe it is a very soothing natural agent and can calm most people even help them rest....

I dont know what to suggest really other than that and i'm sure others here with more experience can help
