Know what you mean. My counselor who I was seeing for something completely different, suggested I should seek a formal diagnosis of ASD. Turns out she was right. Did the diagnosis help you when you got it?

I was diagnosed in my early 40s - had no clue that I was so different to everyone else until it was pointed out in black & white.  

I've played the NT game - got married, family, mortgage, job etc.   Retired out in 2015.
