Hi I'm new

Hello,

I am joining as I may have Asperger Syndrome, I pretty sure I do I even hope I do then at least that way I have an answer.

  • Hi elsing,

The best first step if you think you have Asperger's, is seek a formal diagnosis.

You'll need to go to your GP and ask to be refered to a psychologist (note: not a psychiatrist) who ideally specialises in diagnosing Autistic Spectrum conditions in adults, and for you female adults.

Psychiatrists have the tendancy to rule in all sorts of others conditions before considering something like Asperger's (if they even consider it all) which can lead to mis-diagnosis (because the questions a psychiatrists ask lead them to view the symptoms of Asperger's as symptoms of one of several mental heath conditions), and incorrect, and unecessary, treament.

However, a psychologist, trained in the diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum conditions in adults, will first rule out Asperger's, or Autism, before considering other possible conditions.

  • Hi Bananas, thank you, I'm female, 28, extra help would be a lifeline.

  • Welcome to you. My son was diagnosed at 17.. He was so relieved as it has helped him understand why life has been so hard for him. It also let him access some benefits and extra help.
