Just thought I'd post a quick message to say hello.

My daughter was today diagnosed with Autism, at age 7. Due to our address and and school being in two different county's this has taken quite some time to conclude, but at last we are now making progress.

Anyway I will be spending alot of time on this site over the coming years, so I thought I better say hello. Also if anyone has any good starter pages to look at, that would be great.

  • hi stars - it's gd that you have a mtg with the school soon so that you can discuss the support she needs.  Could I direct you to the home page of this site for statementing info?  It's just that it'll give you all the info you need.  A statement means that the school is obliged to give support, altho you may still have to dig your heels in on certain things because budgets are squeezed.  My son's an adult now.  When he was little there weren't after school groups + he wasn't into the activities you've listed.  Others will come along who'll be more informative than me.  If I was in your position I'd inform the leaders of any groups she goes to of the diagnosis, altho if she'd already attending they will be familiar with her anyway.  I'm don't know whether some of these groups provide extra support for a child with asd.  Maybe - but in the present economic climate it wd surprise me.  I know of a grp for children with asd in my area who have paid staff + volunteers, but that's different from the brownies, etc.  As I sd earlier, younger (!) parents will be able to contribute better than me on that one......

  • thanks for the welcome crystal. we have a meeting with the school on the 18th, so hopefully we can address the issues of support then. I was not aware I needed a S E N Statement, is this something that follows the diagnosis? Also who decides what help she gets?

    On a seperate note, where do people stand with after school groups; dancing, brownies, singing, music etc... do most people inform the leaders, offer support?

  • hi Stars - welcome - sounds like you've had a long journey to get a diagnosis.  This site is excellent for info + support.  Take things 1 step at a time because there's a lot to become familiar with, such as how autism affects your daughter as an individual.  That's a good place to begin.  Have you applied for a special educational needs statement so she can get any extra support she needs at school?  There are lots of posters who will be helpful any time you ask.  bw
