Hi everyone!

Wanted to come on here as my son is 19 months old and is already showing signs of autism. I just wanted some advice really and if anyone has been in the same situation as me.

My son is loving towards me and is affectionate often gives me kisses and he is living towards my mum and dad his grandparents, anyone else he isnt familiar with he finds very difficult to be around them i.e family friends and his dad in particular as we are seperated and he left when my son was very young he refuses to look his dad in the eye and finds it very hard to be around him. My son finds it hard to be around other children and often plays on his own he finds noises from children and babies distressing he doesnt like anything unfamiliar i.e unfamiliar places or surroundings really stress him out. hes funny with his food and often urges even when looking at food. he loves to spin his car wheels he hand flapps all the time although he loves water and his bath time. he just struggles with everyday life really that other children wouldnt.He doesnt sleep has about an hour in the day then 3 hours at night but is constantly moving around and doesnt seem to relax. he isnt talking either or saying any words he cant use a cup and stil has a bottle despite me trying verything and he is delayed at learning he is awating a padeitrition apointment so im hoping theyl explain more to me.

I was wondering if anyone else has been through this or can notice some of the symptoms i have noticed

  • hi - welcome to the site. It's good that you're going to get a paed opinion.  If he is diagnosed as being on the spectrum then the sooner the diagnosis the better, as it should open the door to appropriate services, esp education, which is so important.  There's lots of info on this site as well.  My son is an adult.  When he was little he didn't make eye contact but would watch you when you weren't looking at him.  He didn't talk till he was 5, then he said a phrase.   His pronounciation was poor, but he could write things down so I could understand.  So he could read + write before he could speak.  He could understand simple verbal commands between 1.5 - 2 yrs old.  He would sometimes flap and would spin when over-stimulated without getting dizzy.  He would only eat certain meals at home but his diet was varied enough.  If he went elsewhere he'd eat other meals quite happily.  He went through periods of not sleeping through + then periods when he did.  He was fond of water + physical activities.  We hadn't any problems with potty training, weaning etc.  He reached his milestones for crawling, walking etc.  He needed (+ still does) a routine.  People arriving unexpectedly meant his routine was interrupted.  He could get v upset by that.  He wasn't interested in other children.  He would go to adults if he wanted anything or if he developed a liking for someone in particular.  He was obsessed with thomas the tank engine, + fireman sam to a lesser extent.  Think I better stop there or this could turn into something rather long!
