- Today after 10 years my nephew finally got an autism diagnosis. Feels like a sad day still even though we have been completely convinced he is on the spectrum since before he could even walk. After all the appointments and assessments and reports etc it was just told to us in a 20 minute appointment but we have no idea what to do with this diagnosis. The lady who done his assessment as helpful as she was at the beginning her only suggestion today was this website and apply for pip. We are way more concerned about his safety as he runs off at the first sign of being uncomfortable. This has led to him running from school onto roads etc and the school don't seem to have much experience of autism either and where we turn to next for advice on what's best to support him. The school are adamant that moving him to a specialised school will not be what is best for him as he is doing so well academically and puts even me who has 2 diplomas to shame when it comes to his intelligence and remarkable memory. What is the best way to get support in dealing with his emotions and sensory issues whilst away from home? He does have ear defenders which he uses alot at school but those won't help when another child breaks the rules of a game and he just can't cope with it.
