Autism friendly spaces

Hi all

I am interested in getting to know more about your experience of autism friendly spaces. Are these actually out there? I am wondering whether you know of any businesses that specifically cater for those with ASD such as soft play centres, toy shops or supermarkets. Are you aware of a toy shop that has specific sections for Sensory and ASD friendly toys? If so who and where? Do these sections make it accessible for those with ASD? Do you know of any soft play centres that specifically cater for those with ASD? Again, if so who and where? Have you experienced any shops or supermarkets that have made things more accessible?

I am really interested in this area of accessibility after working with and teaching students with ASD and the difficulties I faced finding facilities out in the community suitable to access and that wasn’t isolating.

What is missing? What is needed?

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated!

regards

vicky

  • Weirdly, I've been thinking about this the last couple of days...

A start would be for companies like TripAdvisor and Google to extend their review questions to include things like 'sensory environment' and/or 'autistic accessibility'...

e.g. 'Steps to get in and no ramp' = low rating for wheelchair accessibility

so 'Noisy with multiple sources of flashing lights' = low rating for 'autistic friendly'
