Choosing self diagnosis

I was told i was autistic by a dr and now is it possible to self diagnose without proffesionals because i agree with the symtoms already. Pls help

  • What a Medical Dr. may say to your face, would be what he believed will help you understand whatever problems you had. Unless he was a specialist Dr. dealing with such autism diagnoses he would not want to go outsides the boundary of his/her own professional specialty.

As just the father one of two, needed, 24x7, Unpaid, Parent, Carers oflast resort for my Autistic Son now aged almost 37 who does not even know, or care he is severely autistic. He has no real ability to understand language and it's structure everybody uses as a code to communicate. He just lives in a self created world of Bart Simpson and other Cartoons. their vocabulary phrases and their bizarre behaviors. and various music CD's all going on together all very loud. Most of the time he is happy  enough, some times he cries for no apparent reason. He takes medication and will occasionally attack you for no apparent reason. He is frightened of the smallest baby and the noise it and small children's chatter makes, as he cannot comprehend any meaning.

From your request for advice. To me, it would seem that you seek and will gain some reassurance and protection if you are officially recognised as being some where on "The autistic spectrum". "and can establish it". I feel certain that you are, but you afraid that somebody with authority to make such a diagnoses will say you are not autistic and put you at a disavantage somehow.

Start with your GP.  go and see him or her and request that you get a diagnoses for your autistic behavior for whatever are your own personal reasons.

  • It seems NAS (I'm sure I read a page somewhere on this site) Agrees people can self-diagnose).

I don't fully understand how though.

What is your reason for not wanting to go to a professional about it? Wouldn't it be better to know for sure?

  • Yeah, that's the definition of self-diagnosis i.e. without professional input.
