Hi I'm new to this site

Hello everyone

I am a mother to a 10 year old boy who is going through the very long diagnosis process. Been to see one doctor to be told that my son has aspergers then off I go to deal with it. His school called me in, in January this year and mentioned the word " autistic" I thought my word had fell apart and what a bad mother I was because I didn't see this!!

Since then I've been back and too to school and ringing doctors and with no support from anyone. Does any one know where I go from here because I haven't got a clue. I have researched a lot and have changed lots of things at home, lots of visual aid and explaining everything we do also keeping to the same routine which has minimised his outbursts. Things are getting a little better but I also have a 7 year old daughter and trying to explain why she can't do certain things is pretty hard. Any help will be very much appreciated.

  • hi - welcome to the site.   There's loads of info on the nas site and also on a site called ipsea.  I would strongly recommend you have a look around those sites, if you haven't done so already.  It sounds like you're doing everything you can to help your son in the meantime.  Other posters will chip in with advice, I'm sure. The diagnosis can take a long time because they want to be sure.  If he is diagnosed with asd then some support should be put in place at school.  I would expect you'd also be allocated a social worker who should advise about claiming DLA, any respite care which your local authority may have to offer. Have they given you any idea at all of when the diagnostic process will come to an end? bw
