Looking for advice

Hey I'm Gemma I have 2 kids Andrew 4 and Christian 1, Andrew has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder his school has been amazing but I'm not sure what help I can get to help me understand him more. He doesn't talk so it makes it really difficult knowing what he wants and so far we have not really been directed to what help we can get for him.

Anyone who has been in a similar situation and has any advice I hope to hear from you!

Thanks

  • hi mummy gemma.  Has the school got a speech therapist + if so is he/she helping your son?  Does your son understand simple commands such as put your shoes on, dinner time, things like that?  Does he write at all? He's only 4 so he's still got time to start talking.  My son was 5 when he 1st talked + that was a short phrase. What I'm saying is that my experience with 1 person with asd only is that some skills develop quicker than others, hence the writing + comprehension before the speech.  This site is vg for getting up to speed so have a gd look around. There are events you cd attend if you can.  There may be a parents group in your area.  You shd ask about a social worker if you haven't got one + enquire about what they can offer to see if you wd want to take any of that up.    People with asd can be sensitive to certain things such as certain noises, certain fabrics on their skin, certain tastes, smells etc etc.  It's worth observing your little one to see if you can suss out if any of this applies to him.  My son went to an autism-specific school so this was my main source of info, along with the nas.  I got to meet other parents via that route as well.  If your son's school is mainstream, then I don't know if there are other children there with asd so you cd meet their parents.  bw
