Autism and learning difficulties

Hi all,

I would love to have other parents to chat to who have children with learning and behavioural difficulties. My daughter is nearly 5 doesn't talk, although sometise makes appropriate sounds that sound like words. She has global developmental delay and only learnt to walk a year ago, she can't build a tower of bricks yet but has started to try and use a spoon and can do small marks with a pen. Her behaviour is very challenging and she punches herself in the head and attacks us by pinching, biting or headbutting us on a daily basis, very often we don't know why. She also pulls her own hair out and has given herself bald patches before.

She understands what you say really well and can follow instruction but quite often resists. She doesn't sign very much because she is behind on her motor skills but can do the sign for more, eat , sleep and where. Thankfully she sleeps and eats well! She doesn't have a diagnosis of autism yet but the paediatritianas said when she was 1yr that she showed signs of it and I feel, although we get good eye contact that he was right. Her anxiety goes through the roof very easily and she copes better in a familiar routine.

I don't know anyone else with a child who has autism and developmental delay and am finding daily life reallychallenging, even supposedlysimple things like dressing her, sitting in the garden with her (eats puts everything in her mouth), in fact at the moment just sitting in the living room is difficult as you get attackeduntil you leave the room!

     Needing an understanding ear!

  • Hi, My daughter is 4 and hasn't had a diagnosis yet either but she is believed to have high functioning autism. She has difficulty with her speech, language and social aspects and her tantrums have become very severe since leaving preschool at the beginning of the summer, she is now kicking us and throwing things. we can't get her to sign anything and is also a challenge to get her to walk anywhere. The worst time is taking her to school which she started last week and when we go shopping as I get a lot of people staring at us while she throws a tantrum on the floor! I find this very overwhelming especiall with the amount of problems we're now getting from the mainstream school that she has just started. I feel isolated and have hardly anyone to talk about her.

I'm sorry, I don't know much about Global development delay Frown

Has your daughter started school or is she cared for at home?
