Hi my name is Andrea, I’m 37 and son Jake is 11 and has a diagnosis of ASD and SPD

Hi everyone, I’m Andrea a mummy to two beautiful boys, Jake 11 and Jamie who is 5. Jake was diognosed and statemented when he was 3.

  • Hi Andrea, welcome. I had to look up SPD as I am fairly recently diagnosed with ASD myself and don't know all the terminology. Looks like it is Sensory Processing Disorder - good that Jake got an early diagnosis.

  • hi yes Jake has ASD and sensory processing disorder, thank you so much much for the warm welcome. I hope your well.

  • I am well thanks. I have just been offered an interesting new job (subject to references). My grown-up son came to stay at the weekend, and I saw my daughter too. That also made me very happy indeed.

Having an autism diagnosis is a really good thing in so many ways. I just wish more children and adults could get an assessment quickly and easily, and then have access to any support they might need.

Did you get the support you needed after Jake's diagnosis or has it been a struggle to get things put in place for him?

  • So glad to hear Jake has good support in place. It's also wonderful that he has the opportunity to socialise with other autistic people. This really helps in terms of creating a positive identity and sense of self.

For those of us diagnosed in adulthood the opportunity to spend time with other autistic people often comes late, if at all. I am fortunate in having met autistic people I share interests with online and offline since my diagnosis.

Looking forward to starting my new job with an autism friendly employer. Very best wishes to you, Jake and Jamie xxxxxx

  • Of fantastic I hope it all goes well for you please keep me updated, yes an early diagnosis is imperative. Jake is doing well he attends a main stream school. But they have autism bases attached to it so Jake is with all autistic children, he gets all the help and support he needs. The best of luck with your job xxxxx
