Newbie - daughter diagnoised today

Hi

My 7 year old daughter has been diagnoised with Autism today and I am feeling a little overwhelmed.  Not sure what the next step should be or how to help her?  I thought that if she was diagnoised things would 'be alright', but nothing has changed and the same behaviour problems are still there. Where are we supposed to start.

  • Hi AJ,

It is often difficult to get your head around it in the beginning. When my son was diagnosed properly at aged 9 we talked lot with the Special Needs Co-ordinator at the school. It's really important to get a Statement of Special Needs put in place, once this was done it helped so much.

I also found it much easier to cope with my sons behaviour and felt I was able to understand him a lot more. I hope this turns out to be the case for you too. As was said in a previous reply, your daughter is still the same little girl, it's just now you know there's a reason for some of the things she does or doesn't do that you didn't understand.
