Newbies/Autistic Virgins

Smile Hi,

I am new to this site!

I am wondering whether my son, me AND Undecided my husband may be on the spectrum somewhere.

Please may I have some advice as what to do next, where do local groups meet, how often, what do they offer teenagers and their parents and adults and their spouses/partners/family?

  • As five hours have passed since you posted I'll venture a reply, just to get things going.

Most areas seem to have a "Parents' Group" of some sort - and you will find these listed as local resources on the NAS website.

"parents' groups" are an anachronism. They primarily address the parents of children with autism/aspergers (sort of asperger's syndrome by proxy - as they tend to be very defensive and activated on behalf of their children).

They don't seem to cater for adults, which is weird given parents may also have the condition in some form, and many don't seem able to give individual membership to the children when they grow up, or to adults on the spectrum. So they can be a bit frustrating.

But they are a useful first port of call. They may have a small reference collection of relevant books and can direct you to diagnoses procedures.

In addition NAS has local groups, across rather a varied range, so check the NAS website.

Some parts of the country there are readily identifiable support groups, other parts seem quite devoid.
