Oscar the star!

As I am writing this my son, Oscar, newly diagnosed, is trotting up and down the stairs asking for pens and paper for his designs. It's 9pm, we're trying to negotiate as well as we can whilst our two younger children are already tucked up in bed. Oscar is utterly unique and full of warmth. He is charming and creative and has great ideas swimming around in his brain all of the time. He is also a handful, hard to control, overactive and he can get aggressive. He has been like that since he was a toddler and we have waited for this day for what feels like an age. He has ASD and he will now get help. He has ASD and the school can now issue a statement. More importantly, he has ASD and that means we can all try to understand his behaviours and the way his mind works and hopefully make his fragile world easier to deal with. So today I am making the first move and joining this community in hope of getting into contact with other parents and carers who are in the same position as we are! Take care all and here's to Oscar, our little star!

  • Hi mamalou,

I love your positivity!  We got it in writing today that our 8 year old son has been diagnosed with either Aspergers and High Functioning.  He is adorable.  We are so fortunate.  We have two lovely healthy boys.  Our 5 year old is "normal".  Our 8 year old doesnt cause is any problems at all.  In fact, he is really well mannered, really well behaved and hysterically funny, and very rarely has a tantrum.  We decided to get him diagnosed as he was obsessed with "twiddling" and was struggling with his writing and concentration at school.  We too are hoping that now the school are also in receipt of the written diagnosis we can move forward more positively in the new September term.  I intend to do all I can, over the school hols, to find teaching strategies, etc, that are suitable to my son, so that I can pass them on to his new teacher, and hopefully watch him shine too!

I wish you all the best of luck with Oscar! xx
